Grade 1 Common Core Math Practice

The focus in Grade 1 is on the following four critical areas:

  • Developing understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition and subtraction within 20
  • Developing understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in tens and ones
  • Developing understanding of linear measurement and measuring lengths as iterating length units
  • Reasoning about attributes of, and composing and decomposing geometric shapes

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

  • Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction (1.OA.A.1, 1.OA.A.2)
  • Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction (1.OA.B.3, 1.OA.B.4)
  • Add and subtract within 20 (1.OA.C.5, 1.OA.C.6)
  • Work with addition and subtraction equations (1.OA.D.7, 1.OA.D.8)

Number and Operations in Base Ten

  • Extend the counting sequence (1.NBT.A.1)
